How to become a Muslim? – Say the Shahada, Declaration of faith

Muslims believe in one, unique, incomparable God, Who has no son nor partner, and that none has the right to be worshipped but Him alone. He is the true God, and every other deity is false.

He has the most magnificent names and sublime, perfect attributes.

No one shares His divinity, nor His attributes.

In the Qur’an, God describes Himself:

Say:

“He is God, the One. God, to Whom the creatures turn for their needs. He begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none like Him.”

(Qur’an, 112:1-4)

No one has the right to be invoked, supplicated, prayed to, or shown any act of worship, but God alone.

To become a Muslim, you must first understand and believe the following basic beliefs:

The first and foremost rule of being a Muslim is believing in the one and only God, (Allah).

Allah is the only God, the only Creator and the Almighty. He is the only one you should be doing your good deeds for and the only one who shall be worshipped. There should be nothing standing in His place.

&
Allah’s messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) is the final Messenger and Prophet of Allah, who came down to Earth, and there will never be any prophets after him.

If you’re absolutely sure that you accept the basic beliefs of Islam and want to fully submit to the will of Allah, all you need to do is recite the Shahada which is a short declaration of faith.

Once you have said the Shahada, you are committed to following Islam for life.

The words of the Shahada are:

“Ash-hadu anla elaha illa-Allah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadun rasul-Allah“,

which translates to

“I testify that there is no other god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is Allah’s messenger.”

Accepting Islam

The Shahada is the first pillar of Islam and is what makes one a Muslim.

The five pillars of Islam (found here) consist of:

The testimony of faith
Five daily prayers
Giving Charity
Fasting the month of Ramadan
Performing pilgrimage to Mecca once in your life

Quran 23:102~108

As for those whose scale is heavy ˹with good deeds˺, it is they who will be successful. But those whose scale is light, they will have doomed themselves, staying in Hell forever. The Fire will burn their faces, leaving them deformed.˹It will be said,˺ “Were My revelations not recited to you, but you used to deny them?”They will cry, “Our Lord ! Our ill-fate took hold of us, so we became a misguided people. Our Lord ! Take us out of this ˹Fire˺. Then if we ever return ˹to denial˺, we will truly be wrongdoers.”Allah will respond, “Be despised in there ! Do not ˹ever˺ plead with Me ˹again˺!Quran 23:102~108

In this Surah people are invited to accept and follow the Prophet. This is the central theme of the Surah. It speaks about the character of true believers and assures that they will be the real successful people. It draws attention to various stages of human creation, to many other universal signs. Then it takes some of the stories of other prophets and tells us that they also preached the same message.

The character of the Believers. Various stages of human creation and Allah’s signs in the universe.
The Message of Prophet Noah, his people’s response and then the flood.
Generations were raised after Prophet Noah. Many prophets were sent among them. Then came Prophet Moses and Aaron and then came Jesus – peace be upon them all.
All prophets are one Ummah and preached the same religion. Those who are affluent think that they are also the righteous people, but the righteous are only those who do the good deeds.
Everything in the heaven and earth belongs to Allah.
Prophet’s job is to continue presenting the message of Allah.
